چکیده
AUSTIlACT: Lumbricus lerres/ris, Alloloboplloro collginosa. and Eisen;o /ocada are \'ectors in tJle transmission of Heterakis gllilinarum nnd Histomonas to chickens and turkeys. The infective stage for Heterak is was found to be tJ1C second-stage ( fi rst post-hatching stage) larvae. Eurthwomls from infected premises thut were maintained 2 to 3 days in cach of tJlTOO or morc chunges of clean soil or 7 doys on moist filter paper transmitted as many cecal worms and produced as many Hislomoruu Infections as did wonns of the same species and source fLod directly from the contnminated soil. Tho wonns' castings produced no infections. Subjecting earthworms to either 1% formalin or 1.5% nitric aeid prevented the transmission of Heterakis and H istomonas. lIeterakis eggs were never found in d issected earthwonns or in washings of parts of earihwomls. Living larvae emerged from the tissues into tJ1C coelomic cavities of d issected worms, and into the medium in which intact wonllS were immersed.

Effect of dimetridazole on transmission of Histomonas meleagridis by Heterakis gallinarum.
The administration of an antihistomonal drug, dimetridazole, at a dose of 0.08% in feed, controlled experimental infections with Histomonas meleagridis in chickens. The treated birds developed no lesions and the duration of infection with H. meleagridis was reduced. This drug regimen, however, did not always prevent incorporation of H. meleagridis into eggs of Heterakis gallinarium; heterakid e...
متن کاملA Further Inquiry into the Source of the Virus in Blackhead of Turkeys, Together with Observations on the Administration of Ipecac and of Sulfur
That the ovum of Heterakis papillosa is an important source of the virus in the natural transmission of blackhead in turkeys is suggested by experimental evidence obtained in the present investigation. Confirmatory morphological evidence has not thus far been obtained to establish definitely that this worm serves as the invertebrate host of Histomonas meleagridis. It is possible occasionally to...
متن کاملPrevalence and pathology of the nematode Heterakis gallinarum, the trematode Paratanaisia bragai, and the protozoan Histomonas meleagridis in the turkey, Meleagris gallopavo.
The prevalence of infection and associated pathology induced by two helminth and one protozoan species infecting Brazilian turkeys are reported. The intestinal nematode Heterakis gallinarum appeared with a prevalence of 70% in the infected birds, without gross lesions when not associated to the protozoan Histomonas meleagridis. Histological findings in the ceca were represented by the presence ...
متن کاملThe 60S ribosomal protein L13 is the most preferable reference gene to investigate gene expression in selected organs from turkeys and chickens, in context of different infection models
Evaluation of reference genes for expression studies in chickens and turkeys is very much limited and unavailable for various infectious models. In this study, eight candidate reference genes HMBS, HPRT1, TBP, VIM, TFRC, RPLP0, RPL13 and RPS7 were evaluated by five different algorithms (GeNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper©, delta CT, RefFinder) to assess their stability. In order to analyze a broad ...
متن کاملVaccination against histomonosis limits pronounced changes of B cells and T-cell subsets in turkeys and chickens
The protozoan parasite Histomonas meleagridis is the causative agent of histomonosis in gallinaceous birds. In turkeys, the disease can result in high mortality due to severe inflammation and necrosis in caecum and liver, whereas in chickens the disease is less severe. Recently, experimental vaccination was shown to protect chickens and turkeys against histomonosis but dynamics in the cellular ...
